Your "AHA" moment

Indulge me please and tell me true.
Has this ever happened to you?

Yep, so here it is. The month you love to hate. MARCH. Long, dreary and depressing... March. drags on and on. and on. and on. ugh.. Then you start thinking... Hmmm, when was the last time I actually even saw one of my friends in person (and no, I'm not referring to their cutesy Kindergarten picture they posted on Facebook last week )

Suddenly you have an "AHA" moment. That's it! I will have a GNO. (that stands for Girls Night Out -no dumb questions here!) Yes, that IS it. So you make the phone calls and follow up with an e-mail. It'a all set -a week from Friday. Woo Hoo!

Looks nice right? Uh...think again.
It's just a matter of time until 'till "the Inevitable" happens.

So... You pull out your fave cookbook for a little appertif inspiration. Then your little gizmo with the list of drink recipes. Hmmm, cosmos? Maybe. Or how about homemade Sangria with organic fruit? Well whatever drink you choose, you will inevitably have a problem. A problem you ask? Yeah. And I'm not talking about breaking it to Cara that her new 'Ravin Raven' haircolor really doesn't bring out her baby blues either.

After your bffs' first drink (and maybe still during) the inevitable question WILL be asked "Hey, which one is mine?" Then it will be asked again. and again. Igh igh igh! Like March- ENOUGH already. Afterall, there's lots of valuable catching up to do, who wants to search for lost drinks all night?

The good news? There is a solution. Finally! A solution to this annoying time waster of a problem. What- you haven't heard??

So… What is polymer clay anyway?

I get that question alot at shows. So I recently added this to my display table. Great for the guys to read as they tag along (whoops I mean shop!) with their wives or girlfriends. ;-)

Here's the technical part via Wikipedia:

Polymer clays all contain a basis of PVC and one or more of several kinds of liquid plasticizer.[1] Pigments may be added to the translucent base to create a variety of colors, along with small amounts of kaolin or white china clay or other opaquing agents where opacity is desired. Mica may be added to simulate pearlescent and metallic effects. Traditional polymer clay hardens by curing at temperatures created in a typical home oven, generally at 265 to 275 °F (129 to 135 °C), for 15 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) of thickness, and does not shrink or change texture during the process.

The history of polymer clay as an art medium is only decades long, unlike many media that have been around for centuries and have long traditions. This newness means that there is a great deal of innovation by users of polymer clay. Often, ideas are born by borrowing from the traditions of some other materials, such as metalworking (mokume-gane), ceramics, glass (millefiori, lampwork), paper, etc. There also is extensive derivation inside the medium itself, as the attributes of this accessible medium lend themselves to sharing and copying.

Leading brands of polymer clay include Fimo; Sculpey, Premo and Studio by Sculpey, created by Polyform Products; Cernit; Formello; Modello; and Kato Polyclay. These can be found in most large chain craft stores, as well as online and smaller craft retailers.

Here's the subjective part- My two cents

Polymer clay is a wonderful and versatile medium to work in. I find it the perfect material for designing jewelry due to its lightweight properties, which in turn provides more comfort for the wearer. It is also very durable, and does not need to be removed when in water. (Of course any piece of jewelry should be treated with a little TLC.) I joke that I picked it up 3 years ago and have not put it down since. There is just something about polymer clay… I strongly suggest you try it! With a word of warning though: There just may be no turning back…

Visit to Montreal

There is a first for everything, and this summer it was a visit to Montreal. Hard to believe that only 3 hours from the serenity of the "Great North Woods" in northern New Hampshire, we would be in such a bustling "Euro" like metropolis! The Hotel de la Montagne is a wonderful Art Nouveau inspired hotel -Metro is their logo font as seen on bottom left ;-) and a perfect destination for two weary parents looking for a few extra amenities and a bit of nightlife for one evening.

If you go and you are up for it, bring your bike. Montreal has bike lanes through most streets, making it one of the more eco-friendly cities I've been to in awhile. (okay, I admit that might not be saying much!) It was definitely a bit of a novelty, and I know my husband especially enjoyed his ride down by the river path the next day while I went shopping.

Aah yes, speaking of shopping... don't forget your wallet, as there is lots of great shopping! And the rate of exchange is good. There are rows of beautiful boutiques with stunning clothing. and accessories. AND shoes. I must admit I enjoyed seeing people who took fashion hmm, how do I say.... maybe a bit more seriously than some of their American counterparts? Ouch...well an insult to me too. (at least on some days, lol) Retail and waitstaff was friendly everywhere we went, and all were bilingual.

We didn't really do any touristy stuff, as I wanted to get more of a feel for the city and have a chance to relax. The French aesthetics were inspiring, and I was glad to have my sketchbook with me. I'm also feeling inspired to brush up on my French. Yes, I'll be adding that to my list of to do's.

Montreal Que. is a culturally hip, picturesque and very enjoyable city to visit. I definitely look forward to visiting again next year....picking up just where I left off.

Unapologetically Purple

Need I say more?

So what exactly is it about this color purple that draws me in like a moth to a flame? Well let me trace my steps back...

I've always had a 'thing' for lavender, and as a teen donned it on my eyelids, lips or any accessory or item of clothing I might have happened to be wearing that day. As I got older, my purple of choice became deeper. Magenta ~such a luscious and intense hue with warm red undertones. Up until a few years ago I always preferred THAT hue over the blue-violet color.

Well suffice it to say that today, blue-violet as well as eggplant, violet, orchid, amethyst or any other purple is welcome anywhere in my home or line of vision.

A few years ago I decided to go all out with my favorite color and re-do the master bedroom. I began my search for purple accessories to accent what I envisioned as becoming "my serene haven" away from it all.

Children would not be allowed to enter, and the bed would get made every day. Clothes would always be in their proper spot in the closet and surfaces such as bedside tables and the bureau would of course be clutter free.

I was striving for a mix of modern sophistication with a dash of art nouveau (hey, I'm eclectic, what can I say?) I was a little surprised to be directed mostly to teen and tween retailers. The thrill of the hunt ensued however, and I soon stumbled upon an array of purple accent items.

So what you may ask became of my serene purple haven? long sigh... Well i've got lots of purple (even the carpet!) There's also lots of laundry to be folded, kids toys strewn about -how many times do I have to tell them! and as of tonight, a foster baby piglet sleeping in the corner. Yes, it's true. Oh well, my life is what it is. but hey...

Morningstar Farms

Do you enjoy Morningstar Farms frozen meatless products. Me too! Are you opposed to Genetically Modified Soy? Yep, I second that too. Do you know that some of Morningstar's products contain GM soy? Sorry...I never like to be the bearer of bad news. (especially if your day has been going well so far)

The good news? There are a handful of their products which do contain organic soy. I called the company and following is the ORGANIC soy list which they gave me.

Call me crazy, but I think it's a sad day in our world when the very food which is supposed to nourish us is tampered with at the genetic level with chemicals.

So, there it is. And here's something else. A very interesting article from Grist magazine regarding soy that is bio-engineered, Why it is (apparently due to Roundup, the pesticide/herbicide) resistance.

Mr. Mudflap Murphy welcome to your new forever home!

Our decision to adopt this big love muffin was the right one. He was SO worth the 5 hour trip to the Finger Lakes region of NY State. We got him him from Joyful Rescues, a wonderful and dog adoption agency run by a truly committed and caring staff of animal caregivers.

Mudflap is such a low maintenance fellow! He showers us all with lots of kisses, and is comfortable just hanging out. His manners are impeccable-and he actually comes when he's called! But let's face it, perfect would be boring! He likes people food. Not that I'm giving him any, but he cleans up crumbs and spills very efficiently!

Oh one more not perfect thing. (though depends on the "ear of the beholder" ) but Mudflap? The name is a bit beneath his pedigree. But I admit it is kinda cute and has grown on me somewhat. Yet, I'm not completely sold. I like Murphy or Griffin. But every time I try to call him one of those names, I get told abruptly by my husband that you can't just change someone's name. oh, and Alyssa yells "No, he's Mudflap" But Leslie? She likes Murphy, or 'Murph'.

Well either way, Mr. Mudflap Murphy Griffin is a very welcome new family member in our home...

Hi. My name is Emily Elizabeth and this is my big brown dog Mudflap.

Okay not yet, but he will be very soon! and yes, you heard right... that's Mudflap!

We are very excited to be adopting this beautiful Irish Wolfhound Mix. He's 3 years old, apparently a total gentleman, and has a face only a mommy could love. (okay daddy too and of course two little girls) I'm going to pick him up this weekend. Will update with more pics. on his arrival home.

Got Old Plastic?

Buttons that is! Chances are you do. Or if you don’t, perhaps you have come across them rummaging through an old sewing tin at a relative or friends house.. or maybe in an antique store? What about that old coat on its way out the door for donation? Wherever or whenever it was, you may not have thought much about them. But these utilitarian adornments do have a story of history to tell for those willing to listen…

While I am nowhere near collector status, I do have a decent array of vintage buttons. I have a small group of plastic art deco buttons (shown) that were made somewhere between 1930-1945. With rapid growth of industrialism at that time in the U.S. and abroad, the art deco ‘look’ was evident everywhere… from fashion, to architecture to the visual arts.

After World War 1, plastic became the “it” material. Durable and cheap to produce, plastic buttons were mass produced, putting a halt to the more finely crafted buttons that had preceded them. There are four types of plastics that were used in button manufacturing. These included Modern Plastics, Bakelite, Celluloid and Composition. My group of buttons falls into the Modern Plastics category.

While there are many more fancifully designed art deco buttons constructed in other materials, my group is much simpler in contrast. Made up of primarily blues and greens, the designs are geometric, linear and bold. These buttons are all plastic, including the shanks on back.

Modern Plastic buttons were made up of two styles. Besides Art Deco, the other button category is known as “Goofies” Goofy buttons were made to imitate real objects in shape. Some popular themes included fruit, animals, as well as various popular icons of the day. These whimsical buttons were often produced in sets.. making them enjoyable from a collecting aspect.

As I become more involved in uncovering the history that surrounds these little artifacts, I can be sure that my attraction to old buttons will become even moreso. Know a thing or two about art deco ‘modern plastics’? I’d love to hear from you!

Hey All-

Hope you're having a great day or night, and feeling free!

Free you ask? That's "different" you may be thinking...

Well really. Isn't that basically what it all comes down to? To find our 'state of bliss' that is... Free of stress, Free in your relationships, Free to say as you please, Free, just FREE!!

Well I had REAL freedom this week. My girls went to stay with their grandparents for 4 days. The anticipation leading up to it was exciting in and of itself! No messes to clean up over and over -Wowza! Ooh and all the projects I'd get done! From my neglected yard to my fantasy of claying for 24 hours straight AND uninterrupted! (except for a brief 7 hours or so to sleep) So I made a list. A very l-o-o-n-g 'TO DO' list.

Yeah well.. there are plans, and then there are days. like. yesterday. I didn't count on a bad mood to be part of the scenario while completing my 'list' . The frustration started slowly then snowballed, turning into one of 'those' days. The kind like Tom Petty frets "you just work so hard and nothing seems to come from it".

We had tickets to go to the theater. (a somewhat rare event) My husband got an earful in the car as I complained and bemoaned the trials and tribulations of SEO. I knew that my mood was ruining our long awaited night out, so I resolved to stop talking or thinking about my day.

Well suffice it to say, it was good to get out. As I sat there in the old amphitheater being transported back in time watching Shakespeare's 'Tempest' -something suddenly dawned on me. The freedom I was so desperately hoping for these few childless days, was being seriously hindered by my thoughts. Who the he** else cares if my closet doesn't get re-organized by Friday? I had actually created my own prison by being rigid and setting hurdles that were just a tad too high. No, you know what? They were WAY too high for a tired mommy who needs at least some REAL downtime.

So did I get everything done? No, of course not. That list was an ideal. But the good news is I accomplished about half of what I intended. And my 24 hour clay time? Well, 4 out of 24 is okay for today. Right now I'm desiring a hot bath, silk pj's and bed.

Aah... Freedom!

Tales of Irony

Yes, today's topic: Irony.

When I was six years old, (back in the early 70's) my parents bought a couple of acres in northern New England. This was to be our vacation retreat. A place for my father to write and recharge, and the rest of us to commune with nature and enjoy the getaway from the rat race of suburban life.

My parents found a local builder to build us our new home away from home, which was to be a modified A-frame. (remember this was the 70's, LOL!) I remember one day driving to the builders house so my dad could talk to him. As my mother and I sat in the car, I noticed the builders house. Not only was it in need of a paint job, the roof was in need of major repair. I remember it striking me as such an odd thing. To create new homes for others, while living in a not so updated one of one's own. Hmm...

As some of you know, I am a mom of twin 3 year old girls. My darling little Leslie and Alyssa are the apples of my eyes. I am also a poly-clay artist. My passion lies in designing unique hair and body jewelry.

So why one may ask do my kids walk around with boring hair ties and non-descript hair clips? And hair accessories, me? I have had a bad hair day my whole life! Yes, there is something about the irony that feels 'familiar'. Perhaps I internalized this "do for others not necessarily yourself" as the norm? Well,rather than get brain drain trying to psychoanalyze it, I do realize that it's time for a change. Afterall, change is good.

So... the time has come that I use my darling gals as models. Drumroll please for my newest line of hair accessories for the younger set. Stay tuned next time for pics. of my little she devils wearing as they say "mommy made dis?" items. As always, your comments are welcomed!

Animal Spirits

So my day started out as usual. Up, coffee, veg out, straighten up, mix it up with the kiddos. I'm a slow as a tortoise in the mornings, I need at least an hour to get a grip. Which is why I will be establishing a 'silence zone' for any friends & family members in my presence who have a need to talk incessantly or loudly, or be annoyingly optimistic first thing in my day. (more on that in another post.. if you're reading this you know who you are!)

Anyway, walking down the stairs to my studio hashing over a bunch of things on my mental 'to do' list. Same ritual as yesterday. and the day before that. I always go 'to work' with that second cup of coffee. yeah, rituals....

So there I am, putzing around, straightening up, sifting through incoming e-mails and thinking. Hmm... what to write on my blog? I have so many ideas usually, but yesterday for some reason was hazier than usual. (I really must start going to bed earlier)

I walk out onto my deck discouraged that it is yet another dreary day in N.J. I then realized that I forgot to look at the tree my husband cut down at the side of the house the day before. Glancing over, I see a deer laying in the grass by all the downed tree limbs. Startled, she looked at me and started to get up. I said out loud "it's okay, just relax".

It was a very cool few moments. Well actually I'd say it was 3 minutes. Three long silent minutes of total calm and quiet. We just gazed at each other. It was natural, serene and had a timeless aspect to it. Like an old intuitive understanding of mutual respect. It was a connection that I don't get very often. With it came clarity, and that for me is always a beautiful gift.

*and it made me forgive her momentarily for eating the flower heads off my geraniums and the deer tick bite taking me to the doctor for a Lyme test from last week.

A Dalmatian with Moxie

Recently we lost our sweet dally boy Tobey.

When I first 'spotted' him almost 7 years ago (pun intended!) at the shelter I was taken aback by his demure disposition and his very handsome looks.

A few days later I went to pick him up. Later, I made up a song about the day "mommy came to pick him up". (Dog/cat lovers will appreciate, others will think I'm plain nuts!)

Anyway, we were told that Tobey was found chained up to the fence outside an animal shelter in Paterson, NJ. Of course this news made us even more grateful to be rescuing this sweetheart who'd probably had a rough start in life. When he got in the car, he was so happy and excited!! He was jumping around everywhere, and was giving kisses galore.

Tobey got lots of love at our house -with furniture priveleges I might add. Everything was great, until my radar went up one evening, when out in the car with the Tobemeister. I was making a phone call and had pulled over to the side of the road. A cop pulled up behind me and came to my window to ask if everything was okay. Well, I had never had a dog of mine react so strongly! (okay maybe not a good comparison as my previous dog was a Bichon Frise named Jingles... but still!)

His first victim was Chris H. We were having a party, and he went in to the bedroom to get his coat off the bed. Tobey apparently lunged at him, nicking his forehead. I went into my bedroom, and there was Chris standing outside the door afraid to come back in. I insisted that Tobey must have just been trying to give him a 'nose nibble' -his affectionate gesture of love.

Well, a few unfortunate incidents later, including the boiler repairman, my brother, and another party guest (who actually provoked our dog by lunging at him with food in his hand) and we knew we had a problem on our hands. We had a lawsuit to deal with, and we knew we had to take some measures of precaution.

We deducted that Tobey had an issue with men. Our assumption was that he'd been abused by a man. Whenever guys would come around, we'd put a muzzle on him. How he hated that thing! He would instantly lie down and cover his snout with his paws...

Well, my husband and I are happy to report that Tobey (or 'the Tobinator' as he was referred to by neighbors) overcame his fear of men over time. With all of the love we gave him, he really began mellowing out. My brother used to joke that it seemed like someone must have snuck into the house and performed a lobotomy on him.

I believe that he came to understand that nobody was trying to hurt him. Now this may sound corny.... but the power of love is SO strong that it cured my boy of his fears. We could not have loved him any more.

I especially miss my big spotty galoot in bed. He was so warm and snuggly. His coat was so silky. When I was pregnant with my girls and going through a moody moment, Chris would say "go snuggle with your Tobey". And it was always soothing. There's something about snuggling with a dog that I find incredibly comforting. It feels like peaceful perfection.

When I became pregnant with my twins, I said uh-oh. How is Tobey going to take this?

So out we went to buy a tape with babies crying. I put it next to him on the bed. He just looked at me, like "whatever" and put his head down and went to sleep. He turned out to be an angel when the girls came home. He had absolutely no issues with them. (Although in the early infant days when he'd look at me questionably like what the heck? -amidst the crying drama. I'd say "I know Tobes, remember the good old days when it was always quiet?" We'd both let out a long sigh....

He was great with the girls -a wonderful family dog. He put up with lots of tugs and seemed to genuinely enjoy his hugs and kisses. Once in a while he'd sleep with Leslie and Alyssa in their bed. Was it a coincidence that those nights they'd sleep the whole night through? I think not...

He was a good boy. A really, REALLY good boy with a heart as big as they come. So I remember this when I miss him (like right now) and find solace in knowing that we did our job as Tobey's mommy and daddy really, really well.

Love truly does conquer all.

Traditionally Spring is the busy season for most hair salons across the country. As formal social engagements abound, so does the need for new and elegant looks for hair. From the demure bride-to-be, the first time prom attendee, to the seasoned socialite- all are in search of a new look for their “most precious” asset.

Locks of Pizazz! Is the brainchild of jewelry and accessory designer Emily Bittner. The artist remarks, “There are so many wonderful designers focusing on interesting and unique jewelry for the body. While I do create some body jewelry, I really have felt the need to create a new area of focus –women’s hair. I am someone who has had her share of ‘hair envy’ due to genetically straight fine locks.
